OUR HISTORY

Most of us started this habit the same way...

Lets get A goat! That was us - back in 1989!

Since we had recently purchased a house on an acre and a quarter, it seemed logical to get that ONE goat.  So off we went on our  "goat-quest". Of course BACK IN THE DAY, websites, craigslist - what were those? They were non-existent, which left us searching the classified ads day in and day out, only to be told yet again - "sorry, its sold".

For months we tried to find a goat - but to no avail.

Then one very cold day in December of 1989 we heard that there were going to be Pygmy Goats at a local feed store. Of course, we didn't expect we would come home with one, but, well.. we did! FINALLY!

Little GUS was perfect! SPOTTED, CUTE, and CHEAP - $35. SOLD!

We brought him home - late in the day. Late because FIRST, we had to search the country for the perfect Christmas Tree! We towed Gus from tree farm to tree farm, a rope around his neck until we finally found that tree!

Then we got home only to realize that we had no place for GUS to live! Nope! We hadn't thought that through! So my dear husband worked late into the night turning an old woodshed into the perfect Pygmy Pen! And in moved Gus!

To make a long story short, after about 2 weeks, it became obvious that Gus was VERY lonely. We contacted the farm that Gus had come from and made an appointment to come out and pick a 2nd Pygmy. This time, there were 15 doe kids running wildly around a pen. Not one of them was friendly or approachable so we told the breeder - just catch one - we will take whoever you catch first! Introducing GERTIE!

3 years later we decided it might be fun to breed our Gertie - just one time! Well, we did that - had triplet DOES - HOOKED!

Then, because those babies were so darn cute, we should take them to the state fair. There, we paraded our motley crew of unregistered doe kids all around the fairgrounds. Each had a bright colored collar which we hand-picked for her alone. Bright Pink, Dark Purple and Navy Blue!

Gus got 3rd out of 16 in the wether class. Well, that one ribbon was enough to keep us intrigued with the whole showing thing, and well...you know what happened next!

We eventually needed to have a few registered does, then a buck would be nice so we didn't have to pay for breeding service, and the story continues!

Today - 22 years later, we have only become more passionate about our precious Pygmies! We love to show our animals,  breed 10-12 does a year, and have developed a terrific herd over the years. We are proud of "Country Critters"

We strive for QUALITY not QUANTITY!

We feel strongly that our animals need to be productive - not only in the show ring and in their kidding capabilities, but we want them to be the BEST Pets ever! Happy, Healthy and Friendly! That is our goal!

Thanks for stopping by!
